Some Pointers

To Poltergeist Behaviour

The proprietor, John Randalls, working late one night recently to restock his shop, heard a loud cough from close behind him. Knowing perfectly well that he was alone in the shop, he nevertheless turned round to check if anyone was there. He said "the hairs on my neck bristled as I looked around - the room was empty".

The proprietor of the camera shop next door, Hugh Mailer, has also heard noises from the flat above when he suspects the premises are empty. Much more interesting is that on several occasions Liz saw the figure of a small, very bent man in dark clothing out of the corner of her eyes and twice she saw the same man quite clearly on the security camera system which monitored the front shop from the private area in the rear. (Unfortunately the camera does not record on tape).

Since I have been interested in unusual phenoma of this type, using the ancient art of dowsing, similar to water divining, I investigated this site and its strange happenings. If there is one place in Crieff where I would expect to find paranormal phenomena it is just here.  Adjoining the back room of City Prices is the old burial-ground belonging to the Parish Church, which may well be a factor, especially as the burial ground has been recently landscaped with heavy machinery, and a ley line runs through the shop from Braefordie standing stone near Comrie, up Crieff High Street, through the town clock and stocks, then the Parish burial-ground to another standing stone at Aberuthven, and yet another further on at Dunning, all in a perfectly straight line - a very  powerful ley line - in fact, the town has been based on the ley line system in the shape of a 6-pointed star.

The tiny, tightly packed City Prices store in Church Street, Street, Crieff, Perthshire, Scotland, has an unwelcome and ghostly resident which has been active over a period of 40 years.

Cup marks Demonic Attack Geopathic Stress Dowsing

For some time he has been puzzled about other unusual occurrences: from the back of the shop he and his wife Liz and staff sometimes hear the heavy front door open noisily, and upon checking, find it locked tightly shut. Occasionally, in full view of the staff it swings wide open, then closes on its own. Clothes and other items are sometimes found in disarray when he enters early in the morning, and shelves previously stacked neatly with spray cans, especially at one side of the shop have been disturbed, typical of poltergeist behaviour.    Occasionally, he can hear the fan in the vacant shop next door running noisily, and, late at night, voices and bangs from the empty flat upstairs. When he goes outside, however, he finds that there are no lights or signs of occupation.

An Underground Stream

Also to be taken into consideration is an underground stream, the Alligan burn, which passes beneath and a few yards to one side of this shop. I have often found that underground streams and geological fissures encourage unusual phenomena of this sort. An underground stream emits a wave of energy vertically to the surface, and another two at 45 degrees, one on each side, giving in effect, three lines of Earth Energy on the surface. The stream also emits spirals or vortices vertically upwards, the centre of the spiral being directly above the stream, and its width is determined by the two outer lines. Apart from poltergeist activity, both the spirals and waves can cause ill-health to the occupants above, especially if they happen to be sleeping in such an energy - I call them black spirals. They may also act as very primitive radios, causing a noise, like a door closing, for instance, to be relayed to a different area, to upset the occupiers of a house further down the line of spirals.

At City Prices I found a black line of earth energy coming through the front window, across the counter and ending in a black spiral close to the left-hand wall where most of the poltergeist activity takes place, and the connecting line between this spiral and its neighbour passes through the spot where John heard the disembodied cough. One day  Liz felt someone passing close by her as she lifted a box and found to her amazement that no-one was near. Also at the centre of the black spiral the staff say there is a cold spot, which is a typical effect of black spirals from underground streams.  More importantly, the black spiral is in front of an old door which had been faced over so that there is no sign of its existence.

Subterranean Streams

A further factor in this poltergeist disturbance is the fact that another subterranean stream flows down, roughly 50 yards to the west of the Alligan burn, which also seems to be partly responsible for this phenomenon. Underground streams and pipes bounce natural and artificial waves of energy down them (wave guides), and sinking a well into such an underground stream channels that energy to the surface.

When I used my divining rods to check the capping stone of a well sunk into this stream (Tibbertreoch well), I could easily find a one metre wide stream of "unhealthy"  waves coming from it, heading eastwards, through the post office courtyard, and into the City Prices shop a short distance away. This type of energy seeks weak points in buildings, and passes through the door (arrowed), which occasionally swings open on its own, through the shop, into the vacant Indian take-away next door, and out of the rear via a ventilation duct (the fan could occasionally be heard to be working, even though the shop has had its electricity supply cut off) and out into the old graveyard, spiraling down into (or possibly out of?) an old grave marked with a headstone.

It is almost as if the energy emitted from this well is forced to the surface, travels 50 yards above ground, and into the shop, somehow compressing the spring in the door to open it and also operating the fan before being attracted back underground, into the Alligan burn, as a circuit of energy. It may also travel in the opposite direction, i.e. from the Alligan burn, through the old grave, above ground and into the well.

Previous Owners Experienced Same Phenomena

A previous owner of  the City Prices shop told me that when she had her hairdresser’s shop there about 40 years ago, she suffered the same phenomena, but preferred to keep quiet about it until reading the story in the local paper. The door, which is the same as the one in modern use, would swing wide open on its own, towels in a basket were in disarray when she opened the shop in the morning (this is at the same place the ladies' underware was disturbed), tea bags and steel wool were jammed down the sink and items, such as bottles of dye and in one case, £100 worth of television stamps, disappeared, and reappeared a few days later in the most obvious of places.     Another previous owner reported that his sister as a child would speak to a "white lady" which he attributed to a childhood fantasy, but his father also insisted that there was a ghostly presence in the back of the shop.

About 5 years ago I was asked to investigate a very mild poltergeist outbreak in the High Street a short distance from this shop (voices, and noises of drawers opening and shutting in an empty kitchen), and found that this particular flat was also near the stream which feeds the Tibbermore well. Again, it seems that such subterranean streams have energies which are very strange indeed.

 A Medium Investigates

John Randells also contacted Archie Lawrie, a psychic investigator, and Francesca, a world-class psychic, who investigated the disturbances in the shop.

Intriguingly, Francesca, who had never been to this area, and who knew nothing of the history of the shop,  said that she could "see" a little bent old man  walking in through the window (where I found the black line entering the shop)  passing across the shop and vanishing through the shelves with the ladies' garments (where I found the black spiral).

Following this information, I traced the black line out into the street from the window, where it travelled into the road and curved round into the back of the premises. Apparently, according to the information Francesca obtained, that window where he entered was originally the archway of the old Inn which previously occupied that position, and where the apparition entered the wall John, flabbergasted, confirmed that there was a hidden door which gave access to the apartment above. He also confirmed that at the back of the premises there was still the remains of the pend or courtyard she could psychically see.

Entity Worried about Owners' Health

Contacting the entity, Francesca told them how he had seen Liz struggling with heavy boxes to such a degree that she was having pains in her chest. Then the medium said that the entity had been genuinely worried for her health.

Liz's mouth opened wide with amazement and she confessed that not only was that correct but that she had actually consulted her doctor recently about the chest pains that the lifting had caused.

More information about the figure of the little old man from Francesca:

He was a farrier (a man who shoes horses), for he had told Francesca  that, and years of bending over his forge had taken its toll on his back, but he was also responsible for attending to the security of the Inn and to that end he would walk through the pend at about I0.30 p.m. every night, pushing any wayward locals who might be hanging around the inn precincts out into the street before closing  the large wooden doors that shut off the Inn courtyard from the street. Then, with his evening's job done, he would climb the stairs inside the pend and go to his rooms which lay over the area that is now the Randell's shop. Francesca also said that she felt that the dear little man had died of a heart attack while in the room over where their shop now is.

John and Liz had been staggered to hear the information Francesca had given them, which so neatly correlated to my work, their own sightings of the entity, the hidden door, the old archway from which he entered, but this latest piece of information left them even more flabbergasted.

Both had occasion to work late at night replacing items from the shelves and generally tidying up, and both felt perfectly normal until about 10.30 p.m., the same time as the farrier cleared people from his archway. After 10.30 p.m., however, both felt an irresistable urge to leave the premises.

When Archie asked them if they had tried working later than 10.30 John said:

"Oh, we've tried that, but we soon found that we got a deep-seated stirring up of our solar plexus and stomach area to such a degree that we felt compelled to give up working for the night and to go home in any case. After all these years we now know the feeling and we know when to get out!"

The only explanation I can think of is that the little old farrier, day after day, year after year, walking along the same path, imprinted his own energy into the unusual  fields of this place, and is still, from time to time returning to keep an eye on the present-day occupants, yet still clearing the area of people as he did so many decades ago.

One final piece of information from Francesca:

Liz was worried about the nightly disturbance of the ladies' clothes (at the black spiral) and thought that the entity might be a pervert, but Francesca, in a brief meditation, said:

"The man was never married and had no female companionship of any kind during his life on earth!"

Francesca and Archie were genuinely sad at hearing about such a lack of companionship and we could then guess at why the touch of a female garment might mean so much to the entity: the little man might have led a sad and lonely life.
